From the Heart

This weekend is especially meaningful for my husband, Matthew, and me as we celebrate both Valentine’s Day and our wedding anniversary, a reminder of love promised, tested, and renewed. Happy Valentine’s Day! It feels fitting that this week’s Gospel invites us to reflect on the condition of our hearts.

At first glance, Jesus’ words in Matthew 5 may feel overwhelming. Who among us has never harbored anger, spoken rashly, or loved imperfectly? Yet the good news is found in His opening statement: He fulfills the Law. What we cannot accomplish through discipline alone, Christ accomplishes through grace. He does not merely raise the standard; He walks with us as He transforms our hearts.

The gospel reminds us that righteousness is not about doing the bare minimum. It is about allowing God to reshape our desires, intentions, and relationships. Jesus calls His followers to be reconciled with each other before offering gifts at the altar, to speak truthfully, and to pursue faithfulness with integrity. In other words, our worship of God cannot be separated from the way we treat each other.

As we soon enter into the season of Lent, we have the opportunity to examine not only what we do, but who we are becoming. Are our words healing? Are our relationships marked by reconciliation? Is our faith reshaping us? Christ meets us not in perfection, but in willingness to heal what is broken and strengthen what is faithful. Let us ask God for renewed hearts. Hearts aligned with His love, truth, and mercy. In Christ, the Law is a promise fulfilled, drawing us into a life that reflects His love for us and for each other.
